Gayathri Devi, PhD in the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Sciences and a Duke Ahead member will present an abstract related to the development and goals of the Duke MERITS Education program for the Advancement of Translational Sciences at the 2017 Association for Clinical and Translational Sciences (ACTS) Meeting (April 19-21) in Washington, DC.
Duke MERITS (Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Translational Sciences) is a Department of Surgery Education Initiative, which was started from a Duke AHEAD education award to Gayathri Devi, Associate Director, Research Education, Surgery in collaboration with investigators Ranjan Sudan, MD (Vice Chair Education, Surgery); Stephanie Freel, PhD (Duke Office of Clinical Research); Debra Brandon, PhD, RN (Duke School of Nursing); and Mark Dewhirst, DVM, PhD, Associate Dean of Faculty Mentoring.
Drs. Devi and Freel will present the study results collected from focus group meetings and the launch of a university wide survey including faculty and trainees from Duke School of Medicine, Nursing, Trinity Arts and Sciences, Nicholas School of Environment and Pratt School of Engineering to gain a broad understanding of how Duke faculty with multidisciplinary research interests view translational sciences; need for resources to train the next generation, and associated barriers and challenges. In addition to Devi and Freel, co-authors in this abstract include Laura Fish, PhD (Behavioral Health and Survey Research Core, DCI); Ben Mirman (Duke undergraduate student); Donna Crabtree, PhD (DOCR); Amanda McMillan, MPH (CTSA); Debra Brandon, PhD, RN (School of Nursing) and Ranjan Sudan, MD (Surgery).
