Background: Duke AHEAD and the new Duke Health Center for Interprofessional Education and Care (IPEC) are pleased to join forces to offer grant funding for Duke faculty and affiliated health professionals engaged in education program development for students enrolled in profession specific degree programs at the Schools of Medicine and Nursing—this includes Doctor of Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Doctor of Medicine, and Nursing (ABSN, MSN, DNP). This funding is intended to provide support for innovative curricula aimed at students from two or more professions to learn “about, from, and with” each other. Our purpose is to support the development of programs that will provide students authentic experiences in interprofessional education and care.
Proposals: Successful proposals will be both innovative and interprofessional. Innovations may take the form of coursework, practicums, clinical activities involving students, service learning opportunities, or curricula or co-/extra-curricular activities focused on shared competencies or novel teaching strategies for interprofessional groups of students. All proposals will be expected to include a description of clear, achievable objectives with appropriately designed learning strategies. In addition, proposals should include a well-delineated plan for learner assessment and program evaluation that provides data that is meaningful for both participants and leaders. Specifically, evaluation plans should provide information that supports the development and sustainability of the curriculum and its dissemination through presentation and publication. Additionally, project leadership should be interprofessional and representative of the professions of students participating. For this purpose (adapted from the WHO Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Practice), “interprofessional” means two or more professions collaborating and learning about, from and with each other to enable effective teamwork and, penultimately, to improve health outcomes. Thus, two nurses collaborating or two physicians collaborating – even if crossing disciplines -- is not interprofessional. Likewise, a proposal targeting learners within the same professional cohort – even if lead by collaborators with different professional affiliations – may not be competitive in this funding mechanism. We will prioritize support of projects that are innovative and illustrate the potential to positively transform the educational experience of participating students and the learning environment in Duke Health.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to register for and attend the Duke AHEAD workshop led by Dr. David Gordon on Education Grant Preparation on December 11th from 12-1:30 PM in Trent Semans Classroom 3.
Eligibility: Duke faculty and affiliated health professionals engaged in education program development for students enrolled in foundational degree programs at the Schools of Medicine and Nursing, trainees and learners may be included as collaborators. One faculty member must be designated as the Principal Investigator (PI). (Note: VA faculty and staff are eligible to participate as collaborators, but projects must have a PI at Duke.) In the event that the LOI is selected for review as a full proposal, the Principal Investigator must provide a letter of support from his/her department chair or other equivalent chief of service or supervisor who most directly oversees his/her/their career advancement.
Important dates: Letters of Intent (LOI) are due by December 20th at noon. Feedback from reviewers will be provided by January 6, 2020 and the full proposal (from those invited to submit) will be due by February 10, 2020 at noon. Recipients will be notified beforehand and will be recognized at a celebration during Duke AHEAD’s Health Professions Education Week, March 3-6, 2020. Funds will be available on July 1, 2020.
Evaluation: Reviews of full proposals will be performed by a committee of IPEC staff and Duke AHEAD steering committee members and evaluated according to alignment with the mission and goals of the IPEC Center including:
- Evidence of interprofessional collaboration in project leadership and development
- Depth and authenticity of engagement of interprofessional students
- Clear and achievable learning objectives and appropriately designed learning strategies
- Quality and rigor of assessment plan (outcomes)
- Potential for broader impacts (collateral benefits beyond study/project participants)
- Potential for scholarship
- Overall organization and quality of proposal
Our aim is to fund one project in an amount up to $10,000, and up to three projects up to $5,000 each. Support will be limited to resources and services necessary for project implementation. This may include financial support for individuals for facilitation or teaching that is not part of their current effort and with an allowance for up to 25% of the total budget for PI salary support if necessary. The grant review committee reserves the right to award funds based evaluation of the submitted budget on the number of applications received.
