The Impact of Historical Trauma on African American Patients: Our Ethical and Trauma Informed Response

Learning Objectives:

  • Define Historical Trauma
  • Origins of Historical Trauma in the Black Community
  • How Historical Trauma can manifest in the provider/patient relationship
  • How I as a provider can respond to my patient in a trauma informed way

Now more than ever it is important that we as providers understand the impact that Historical Trauma has had on many African American patients.  When we think about the root causes of health disparities, Historical Trauma certainly factors in.  Participants will define what Historical Trauma is, see how it manifests in the patient/provider relationship and will learn how to provide trauma informed care.
