Frequently Asked Questions

1. What prompted the implementation of these new membership designations?

Answer: Educators’ participation in Duke AHEAD should contribute toward their promotion. Promotions & tenure committees reviewing members’ CVs often seek to better understand the type and extent of members’ participation. Membership designations are meant to contextualize members’ engagement and highlight members’ contributions.

2. Who determines the membership designation for each year?

Answer: Members are asked to self-report their membership level, using the provided descriptions. Duke AHEAD Grand Rounds and Education Day events confer continuing education credits and are visible on your JA transcript, which can be accessed here and located by searching terms like “Education Grand Rounds” or “Education Day.”

3. Do membership designations change over time?

Answer: Yes. Each academic year, a member would assess the type and extent of his/her engagement with Duke AHEAD. If the member has not met the criteria for any of the named membership designations, he/she would use the term “Member” for that year. When, however, he/she has engaged with Duke AHEAD enough to meet one of the listed membership categories, he/she would use the appropriate term to describe his/her engagement for that year. Each academic year should be labeled with the most appropriate membership designation(s); moving “up” or “down” levels from year-to-year is expected, as is the possibility of simultaneously meeting two designations in a single year (see CV examples above). A Duke AHEAD Fellow would retain the Fellow designation year after year, unless the Fellow is selected as a Distinguished Member (which would supersede the Fellow title, and would be retained for as long as the individual is a Duke AHEAD member).

4. Can I use other educational activities, not mentioned above, as evidence of active involvement in Duke AHEAD?

Answer: Probably not. There are many ways to be an active educator within Duke Health (e.g., speaking on an education topic at a departmental conference, leading trainings for peers, or serving on a selection committee for the hiring of an educator). All of these important activities should be included on your CV, but not under the heading of “Duke AHEAD.” If there is a specific activity you performed with or in service to Duke AHEAD that is not listed in the membership designation descriptions, contact DukeAHEAD@duke.edu to see if it qualifies.

5. Can this be retroactive?

Answer: Yes. If you would like to apply these designations to your prior years of engagement with Duke AHEAD in order to illustrate your past involvement, you can use the new terminology to update your CV.

6. To whom do I reach out with questions?

Answer: Members, supervisors, or individuals on promotions & tenure committees can email DukeAHEAD@duke.edu.
